Plate Heat Exchanger Installation and Assembly
We will explain to you why we recommend that you mount the plate heat exchanger on the cold water side. Thermal pressure syphons are actually quite simple.
Basically, the water line will come in, and you’re going to cut it, and then you’re going to mount it into the plate exchanger, and we always recommend unions. Now you need a lead-free, copper, or brass union. We use lead-free brass here.

Uses and Applications of Plate Heat Exchangers

A Plate Exchanger: How Does It Work?
Water is going to be coming in this way from the domestic hot water side. It will flow in the opposite direction from the wood boiler. By creating a cross flow difference, you will get more heat exchange. Identifying the boiler coming in with the red pipe, it is going to enter through the bottom, rise up the flow, and then return to the boiler or to your next heating system. Thermal pressure syphon is the reason and how this works.
In this case, the water coming out of the boiler is between 170 and 180 degrees. You are heating up water in this plate exchanger, which is coming in at about 55 degrees, give or take a couple degrees depending on your zip code. The water in here is getting hotter and hotter and hotter. As water heats up, it expands, and because this pipe is pressurised, it is also building pressure. This is how the water reaches your tap.
There’s a lot of pressure building as the water gets hotter. The water in the tank is naturally cooled, which is why so much insulation has been put on it. This reduces the pressure in the tank. In other words, the pressure between this and the water jacket in here and the water in here will be neutralised. Once the pressure has been neutralised, the water temperature will be equalised. This is how a thermal pressure syphon works.
Once again, the water in here heats up, builds up pressure, and slowly but surely cools. Those two will neutralise at the same PSI or pressure, which corresponds to about the same temperature. There will be no pump, no circulation, and this tank will be around 130 degrees. If it’s installed correctly, it will use a thermal pressure syphon to do it.

The most important thing is to make sure you’re using copper or brass that’s lead free on the domestic hot water side. This is water that will now enter your domestic hot water system, so you must use this grade of metal. So you could possibly drink the water, and you could also bathe in it.
