How to Install a Plate Heat Exchanger on a Hot Water Tank

Plate heat exchangers: how they work

Heat is extracted from the wood furnace and distributed throughout the house through a plate heat exchanger.

With a truly efficient and renewable resource, wouldn’t it be nice if you could heat your home, provide all the hot water you need for your baths, showers, laundry, and heat your pool and spa? How about heating your home while helping the environment? What if it were free?

There is a resource that meets all of these requirements. Just look around the corner or down the street.

People will reply, “But that is old-fashioned and inefficient.”. Hey, and it takes a lot of time. Oh, and it is dirty too!”

As wood heating has become more popular, this is not necessarily the case. Modern wood furnaces use the most advanced heating technology available. With water and plate heat exchangers, your furnace will burn efficiently and cleanly outside your home. Typically, it can be connected to your existing system to distribute heat.

You won’t have the mess associated with indoor stoves since all your fuel is kept outside. The unit will burn any kind of wood. Including knotty pieces. Even in the coldest weather, you only have to feed it once or twice a day. Load it up in the morning and evening, and it will take care of the rest. Water heated to 185 to 200 degrees surrounds the firebox, then it courses through tubing to the house where it is converted to hot air through heat exchangers.

Gas, coal, and oil are fossil-based, non-renewable resources, and their prices have risen dramatically in the last year. Electricity prices have risen as well.

The environmental impact of these fuels must also be considered. The methods used to extract fossil fuels are harmful. Burners in the home are inefficient unless they are professionally and continuously maintained. Our fragile ecosystems are often affected by coal-fired plants or by hydroelectric dams that produce electricity.

It is impossible to find another source of home heating that can offer you all the benefits of a timber-fueled system. It is environmentally friendly, economical, and efficient. With a little added effort, you can reap the rewards. This is an energy source that is widespread. The leaves from cleared properties are of great use to you. All you need is a tank of gas to haul it home and your family will be warm all winter.

Alternative Heating & Supplies is dedicated to bringing you the latest innovations in this technology, along with full service parts & accessories. With years of experience, we can guide you in choosing the right equipment for your home.

Plate Heat Exchanger Installation and Assembly

We will explain to you why we recommend that you mount the plate heat exchanger on the cold water side. Thermal pressure syphons are actually quite simple.

Basically, the water line will come in, and you’re going to cut it, and then you’re going to mount it into the plate exchanger, and we always recommend unions. Now you need a lead-free, copper, or brass union. We use lead-free brass here.

Here you should put a union, then go down to the plate exchanger, then another lead-free union, and then back into the domestic hot water tank.

Besides being stainless steel, the plate exchangers that alternative heating & supplies sell are also 40% heavier than those that are also available on the market.

Uses and Applications of Plate Heat Exchangers

These exchangers can be used for a wide range of applications, from cooling or heating diesel to exchanging heat between polyurethane and a refrigerant. However, the heat exchangers we have made are specifically designed for wood boilers. In essence, it’s a much heavier grade of plate exchanger, which hurts the efficiency a little but has the quality and longevity rather than having to replace it every 4 to 5 years. We went with a heavier grade and they should last you the life of your boiler, if not longer.

A Plate Exchanger: How Does It Work?

Water is going to be coming in this way from the domestic hot water side. It will flow in the opposite direction from the wood boiler. By creating a cross flow difference, you will get more heat exchange. Identifying the boiler coming in with the red pipe, it is going to enter through the bottom, rise up the flow, and then return to the boiler or to your next heating system. Thermal pressure syphon is the reason and how this works.

In this case, the water coming out of the boiler is between 170 and 180 degrees. You are heating up water in this plate exchanger, which is coming in at about 55 degrees, give or take a couple degrees depending on your zip code. The water in here is getting hotter and hotter and hotter. As water heats up, it expands, and because this pipe is pressurised, it is also building pressure. This is how the water reaches your tap.

There’s a lot of pressure building as the water gets hotter. The water in the tank is naturally cooled, which is why so much insulation has been put on it. This reduces the pressure in the tank. In other words, the pressure between this and the water jacket in here and the water in here will be neutralised. Once the pressure has been neutralised, the water temperature will be equalised. This is how a thermal pressure syphon works.

Once again, the water in here heats up, builds up pressure, and slowly but surely cools. Those two will neutralise at the same PSI or pressure, which corresponds to about the same temperature. There will be no pump, no circulation, and this tank will be around 130 degrees. If it’s installed correctly, it will use a thermal pressure syphon to do it.

Recommendations for the installation of Plate heat exchangers

The most important thing is to make sure you’re using copper or brass that’s lead free on the domestic hot water side. This is water that will now enter your domestic hot water system, so you must use this grade of metal. So you could possibly drink the water, and you could also bathe in it. Just make sure you have copper or brass of good quality. is a leading supplier, stockist, manufacturer & exporter of Seamless A214 Tubes & SA214 Tubes.
