Despite its high strength-to-weight ratio, cold drawn tubing can be processed to provide a combination of desirable properties, including excellent surface quality, excellent micro-structure uniformity, good machinability, and high tensile strength. As a consequence of rolling in an Assel mill equipped with an end-loss-free unit, seamless mechanical tubing can be produced from solid round billets by rotary piercing. Tubes are then processed through a multiple-pass sizing reducing mill and a rotary sizer. 1018 has a wide variety of applications. It is used for parts requiring cold forming, such as crimping, swaging or bending. For severe bends, stress relieving may be necessary to prevent cracking. It is highly suitable for carburized parts, such as gears, ratchets, worms, pinions, pins, chain pins, dowels, machine parts, non-critical components of tool and die sets, tool holders, etc. It is used when good workability is required, on parts requiring threading, drilling, punching and machining. It is extensively used for mounting plates, spacers and fixtures. C1018 is suitable for all applications that do not require the greater strength of high carbon and alloy steels.
AISI 1018 mild/low carbon steel has excellent weldability, produces a uniform and harder case and it is considered the best steel for carburized parts. AISI 1018 mild/low carbon steel offers a good balance of toughness, strength and ductility. AISI 1018 hot rolled steel has significant mechanical properties, improved machining characteristics and has a high Brinell hardness measure.
